Overview

Lucknow – a teeming bastion of hybrid culture and heritage – is renowned for its many treasures. A metropolis of magical charm and well-conserved monuments, it is known with good reason as 'The City Of Many Splendours'.

Lucknow’s history is held by some to stretch back to over three thousand years ago. The city gained greater significance in 1775 when Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula shifted the state capital from Faizabad to Lucknow. This is when the Lucknawi culture of sophistication, elegance, courtly etiquette, and the art of speech was born. The Nawabi era, which lasted until 1857, witnessed the construction of many amazing monuments. When we delight in such structures as the Asfi Imambara and the Kaiserbagh Baradari, we are reminded of the determination of the Nawabs to render Lucknow a treasury of national heritage.

Lucknow also gained prominence for its own style of classical singing. Begum Akhtar, the 'Queen of Lucknawi Thumri and Ghazals', shared with the world the dulcet richness of her voice – and became, for all time – an ambassador of Hindustani culture.

Amir Hasan wrote of Lucknow that, “No other city can perhaps claim to have won a larger measure of love and loyalty from its citizens …”. Hazrat Narikh rhapsodized: “Lucknow Hum Pe Fida, Hum Fida-e-Lucknow, Kya Hai Taqat-e-Aasman Ki Jo Humse Chhurdaye Lucknow!” Roughly translated, this means: Lucknow is in love with me and I am in love with Lucknow; no force can part us twain.
